About Us
Our History
The Grand Krewe de Libertalia stands as a proud symbol of progress, inclusion, and unity within Tampa Bay’s cherished Gasparilla traditions. Established in 1992, we made history as the first Black Krewe to participate in the Gasparilla parades, breaking barriers in a celebration that had, for nearly 90 years, excluded diverse representation.
Our Krewe’s name, “Libertalia,” is inspired by the mythical pirate colony said to embrace freedom and equality for all—a fitting reflection of our mission. From our inception, we have worked to bridge communities, celebrating the rich diversity of Tampa Bay and promoting a spirit of unity and inclusion through our participation in the city’s beloved festivities.
The roots of our Krewe trace back to a pivotal moment in Gasparilla’s history. In 1991, after the Gasparilla parade was canceled amid calls for greater diversity, our founders envisioned a Krewe that would not only participate in the parade but also redefine it. The Grand Krewe de Libertalia debuted in 1992 with a float symbolizing racial harmony, featuring a black and white hand joined in unity. Our presence signaled a transformative change for Gasparilla, opening the door for a more inclusive future.
Today, the Grand Krewe de Libertalia remains deeply committed to its founding principles. With a diverse membership of approximately 35 individuals from all walks of life, we continue to champion inclusion and equality in Tampa Bay. Beyond the parades, our Krewe is actively involved in giving back to the community, partnering with organizations like the Hillsborough Education Foundation to provide scholarships for students who have overcome significant challenges.
Whether you’re a long-time supporter or new to the Gasparilla tradition, we invite you to join us on this remarkable journey. Together, we can honor the past, celebrate the present, and shape a more inclusive future.
